Addition!

Image
We are practising our number sense skills by learning addition. Students in grade one should be able to add numbers up to 20. Students in grade 2 should be able to add numbers up to 100, with and without regrouping. I will be teaching regrouping strategies to the grade 2’s next week. In the meantime, please see our chart of strategies below!

Liquids and Solids

Image
We have been studying liquids and solids in class. Recently, we created mixtures made of some liquids and solids. We followed the scientific method and made a hypothesis about whether a solution would be heterogeneous or homogeneous. We had fun doing the experiments!

Thanks to Ms. Williams for bringing this great coding activity by our room! We had fun!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back everyone and Happy New Year! I hope you all had an enjoyable winter holiday and spent some great time together as a family. We are currently finishing up our Data Management (graphing) unit in Math, and will be moving on to addition and subtraction next week!  In Language, we will be writing some personal recounts about places we've gone, things we've done or trips we've taken. We'll also continue our guided reading groups where students read 'just right' books in small teams, with the teacher. Our next Science unit is "liquids and solids" where we will explore properties of the different states of matter. Things you can work on at home: - Continue to read the books sent home in the homework folder. Your child should be able to read these books to you, independently. - Grade level reading at this point in the year is: Grade 1's at level 10-14; Grade 2's at level 18-24. - You can focus on sight words in print, for example...

Happy Holidays!

My apologies for not posting sooner. We’ve had a busy couple weeks finishing up our shapes unit and moving on to graphing. We also finished our story retells and have been enjoying some new classroom books. I’d like to thank our special friends who donated toys for all our students, which the kids received yesterday. My gratitude to all of you for your well-wishes and kind gifts. I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday filled with time together as a family. I look forward to seeing you all in 2020. All the best, Megan Page

Retell Examples

Image
On Thursday, your child will bring home their most recent writing assignment, a retell based on the book, “The Little Red Hen”. Please review the feedback I have provided and the success criteria as well. Below are two examples (a Grade 1, then Grade 2) of grade-level retells. These students have a received a B on this assignment and have met most of the success criteria. You can review these examples with your child as well. Next week, we will be doing our final retell where I will evaluate and assign a writing mark. Thanks for your support!
